9 Effective Duas For Pain, Sickness, And Relief

It can feel like our whole world is coming apart when we are sick. During these challenging times, our faith can bring us comfort and healing. Many duas for sickness can help us feel better and find strength when sick. They can be found in the Quran and Hadith. This piece will look at ten of these powerful duas for sickness, along with their English versions from the Quran and Hadith.

A Dua For Healing (surah Al-isra, 17:82)

The Quran tells us that Allah is the only one who can heal us. These duas for sickness ask Allah to help you through tricky times:

“وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۙ وَلَا يَزِيدُ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا خَسَارًا”

“Wa Nunazzilu Mina Al-Qur’an Ma Huwa Shifa’un Wa Rahmatun Lil-mu’minīn, Wa Lā Yazīdu Aẓ-ẓālimīna Illā Khasāra.”

It says, “And We send down from the Quran that which heals and forgives believers, but it does not make wrongdoers better except in loss.” (17:82 in Surah Al-Isra of the Quran)

Seeking Happiness (surah Al-baqarah, 2:286)

Our Desire For Safety And Health Grows When We’re Sick. This Dua Asks Allah To Take Care Of Them:

“رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِن نَّسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ أَنتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ”

Rabbi ‘Akhidhna in Naseena aw akhta’na has been translated. Isran kama hamaltahu ‘ala alladhina min qablina wa la tahmil ‘alayna. Dear Rabbana, may Allah grant you peace and speedy healing. Thank you very much for your message. In the words of a mawlana, “ala al-qawmi al-kafirin.”

In English: “Our Lord, don’t blame us if we forget or make a mistake.” Our Lord, please don’t give us a load like the ones you gave to those who came before us. Please don’t give us anything we can’t handle, Our Lord. Please forgive us and be kind to us. You are our guardian, so help us beat those who don’t believe.” 

A Healing Dua From The Prophet (hadith – Sahih Al-bukhari)

This prayer to heal was given to us by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This is one of the best dus for being sick:

“اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ، اشْفِهِ، أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا”

It Reads, “allahumma Rabb An-nas, Adhhibil Ba’sa, Ishfihu, Anta Ash-shafi, La Shifa’a Illa Shifa’uka, Shifa’an La Yughadiru Saqaman.”

“O Allah, Lord of all people, take away this illness and heal him.” “You are the only one who can heal, and there is no other way to get better than through You.

Finding Patience (al-baqarah 2:155–156)

Being Sick Can Make Us Wait A Long Time. This Dua Asks For Strength And Endurance In Times Of Trouble:

“وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ أُولَٰئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَوَاتٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ ۖ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُهْتَدُونَ”

“We lanabluwanakum bishay’in mina al-khawfi wal-joo’i wa naqsin mina al-amwali wal-anfusi wal-thamarat.” Written in Arabic script. Have mercy on us, all of you who are Muslim, and may you find peace in Allah and his messenger. “Thank you very much, Rabbi and Rabbinate, and thank you for the meal.”

“And We will test you by making you scared and hungry and taking away your wealth, lives, and food. But good news comes to those who wait and say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed we will return to Him.” Those are the ones who will be blessed and shown kindness by their Lord. And those are the ones who are [rightly] led.” 

Emotional Pain Relief (hadith – Sahih Al-bukhari)

When You’re Sick, You Often Feel Bad About Yourself. This Dua Asks For Comfort:

“اللهم يا مقلب القلوب، ثبت قلوبنا على دينك.”

Translated, It Means “allahumma Ya Muqallib Al-qulub, Thabbit Qulubna ‘ala Deenik.”

“o Allah, The Shaper Of Hearts, Make Sure Our Hearts Are Firm In Obeying You.”

Wanting Safety (surah Al-mu’minun, 23:97–98)

We Can Feel Weak And Let Evil Thoughts Take Over When We’re Sick. This Prayer For Sickness Asks For Protection:

“رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحْضُرُونِ”

“rabbi A’udhu Bika Min Hamazati Ash-shayatin, Wa A’udhu Bika Rabbi A Yahdurun.”

It means, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the devil’s temptations, and I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be with me.”

Dua For Strength (hadith According To Sahih Al-bukhari)

This Dua Asks For Strength And Energy When You Are Sick:

“اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْقَسْوَةِ وَالْغَلَبَةِ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ وَقَهْرِ الرِّجَالِ”

“allahumma Inni A’udhu Bika Minal-ajzi Wal-kasali Wal-bukhli Wal-harami Wal-qaswati Wal-ghalabati Min Ghalabatid-daini Waqahri Rijal.”

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being unable to do anything, being lazy, being mean, being afraid, having too many debts, and being dominated by men.”

Dua For Pain Relief (hadith – Sahih Al-Bukhari)

In Times Of Physical Pain, This Dua Is One Of The Most Effective Ways To Get Better:

“اللَّهُمَّ أَنتَ عَبْدِي وَابْنُ عَبْدِي وَابْنُ أَمَتِكَ، نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ.”

It Reads, “allahumma Anta ‘abdi Wa Ibnu ‘abdi Wa Ibnu Amatik, Nasīyatī Bi-yadik, Mādin Fiyya Ḥukmuk, ‘adlun Fiyya Qadā’uk.”

“O Allah, I am Your servant, the son of Your servant, and the son of Your maidservant.” “My forelock is in your hands; Your order about me is final, and Your choice about me is fair.”

Mercy And Healing Dua (surah Al-anbiya, 21:83-84)

This Is One Of The Duas That Sick People Say To Ask Allah To Help Them:

“وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ * فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ فَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِ مِن ضُرٍّ ۖ وَآتَيْنَاهُ أَهْلَهُ وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْعَابِدِينَ”

It reads, “Wa Ayyuba idh nada rabbahu annee massaniya a l ddurru waanta ar h amu a l rra h imeen * fa i stajabna lahu fakashafna ma bihi min ddurrin waatayn a hu ahlahu wamithlahum ma’ahum ra h matan min ‘indin a wa th ikran lil.AA a bideen.

“And talk about Job, who called out to his Lord and said, “Yes, trouble has hit me, and You are the most merciful of all the merciful.” So, We reacted to him and took away what was making him unhappy. And We gave him back his family twice as much as before. It was Our kindness, and it was a lesson for intelligent people.
